Community Risk Reduction

The Community Risk Reduction Division's objective is to provide and promote safety initiatives for the community with the goal of reducing risk throughout the town of Charlton.  The following components are integral in making risk reduction viable.

Fire Prevention

The fire prevention unit is comprised of the Fire Inspector who is responsible for plans review, code enforcement, fire pre-planning, permitting and inspectional services for the department. For a detailed list of inspections performed and permits processed view Fire Prevention - Inspections/Permits.

To schedule an inspection or if you have questions concerning permits/inspections, contact the Fire Inspector via email or by phone at (508) 248-2278.

Students Awareness of Fire Education (SAFE) Program

SAFE has been in existence since 1996.  It is a community outreach program to educate the citizens on Fire Safety: These are specific programs targeted at school children and senior citizens, but willing to provide educational programs to all groups within the community. Services provided include Family Fun Day, station tours, Fire Safety week in the local schools, and Operation Safe Prom at Bay Path High School. For more information on programs offered, email the SAFE Coordinator.

Fire Investigation Unit

The department currently has two (2) Certified Fire Investigators with advanced training called upon to assist in determining origin and cause of fires.  These investigators are also part of the Massachusetts Fire District 7 Fire Investigation Unit.

Address Indicator Program

The Charlton Fire Department provides for the installation of a reflective, highly visible house number sign to aid in identifying the address from the road.  When seconds count, the ability for 1st Responders to find the correct address can make all the difference.  For more information on the importance of house numbers, click House Number.

Home Safety Inspection

The Home Safety Inspection program is designed to educate homeowners on potential hazards within their home and to address tips to keep their home safe.  We will come to the house and perform a simple walk-thru to identify potential hazards.  It is a free service available by simply contacting the SAFE Coordinator to schedule an appointment.

Smoke/CO Detector Program

The Smoke/CO Detector program provides battery operated smoke detectors and CO detectors to those who do not currently have them in their home as determined by a Home Safety Inspection.  Detector protection has been proven to save lives in the home.

Child Safety Seat

The department has four (4) certified Child Safety Seat Installers available to assist the public with car seat installations to ensure they are done properly, according to manufacturer's specifications for your child's safety.  To set up an appointment contact us at (508) 248-2299.
